The Purpose of the Playbook

 

The purpose of the playbook is to describe who we are, how we think, and how we work together. While it was designed as an internal reference to be used by all of our teams, we decided to make it public so that candidates and potential clients can get an idea of what they can expect from us.

If you are considering working with us, this playbook is a closer look at will experience after joining the Coy + family. Use it to help make your decision – what’s most important is that you feel comfortable with how we conduct business.

This playbook was created at the same time as the company itself and will improve and evolve as we grow.

Humans & Technology

Human beings are social animals who like to connect and share. We live in a world where technology is becoming more and more prevalent. Some people see this evolution as a dehumanization of society. We see it as an historical opportunity for human beings to connect easily, break down the walls of old hierarchies, and afford more opportunities and social justice.We value discussion, intelligence and design. We use technology as a tool, and not as an end in itself, to simplify life.

Trust & Transparency

Trust is the basis of any relationship. Deep trust doesn’t happen overnight. It needs to be built over time, but we do our best to nurture the process and make it easy. We tend to trust people readily and expect trust to grow naturally and quickly. We don’t compromise on trust, though. Break the trust once and don’t be surprised to start from scratch. So, keep your promises. Commit. Help others. Be there. Give your best.

Transparency comes together with trust. Team members make all internal activities completely accessible to the entire team: meeting reports, discussions, roadmaps, releases, etc. Nobody should encounter any friction in accessing information.

We trust everybody to make the best use of the information at their disposal.

Comfort in complexity

There is no such thing as a “simple job”. Being excellent in any job is complex. You need to understand the problem inside and out. The path is difficult and takes time. It is important to be humble and to be comfortable with the complexities we are faced with. Even for things that look easy, you should never underestimate or oversimplify. Instead, you must try to understand all the subtleties. It is easy to think that something should be simple to do; it is much harder to actually do it well.

It’s all about the Team

We work with people who enjoy working in teams and believe that the whole is larger than the sum of its parts. We appreciate honesty, civility and altruism. We are human beings doing work for other humans that solve problems around the world.

Thoughtfulness

We try to display the highest ethics, to be honest and open-minded at all times. We always seek excellence and try to produce the best work possible given the constraints we have. We are diligent and pay attention to detail.

High expectations work both way. We have high expectations of every team member, but team members should also have high expectations of the company and how it behaves both internally and externally - we also have high expectations of our clients and external stakeholders. We believe it is more efficient to take the time to understand the problem before solving it. 

Be happy

This is the most important factor. Do what you love to do. We will succeed because we are happy, not the contrary.
